ISO Weekly email (Sept 5th)

Hello new and old orchestra members and families!

New members, welcome to the Duke String School Intermediate Strings Orchestra.  Returning orchestra players - Welcome back! The Intermediate Strings Orchestra is conducted by Mr. Rob Rhempher.  Rehearsals will be Saturdays, from 8:45-10:00 a.m. in Bone Hall. The orchestra has one parent assistant: Elizabeth Shamblin (me, authoring this email).

For those who are new, let me introduce myself: my name is Elizabeth Shamblin, and I have four boys in DUSS who play various instruments. Some of you may know me as the “lunch lady” from summer camp. (I will be  glad to make you a rosin sandwich or some raviola if you get hungry.)

What to expect at rehearsal on Saturday: This first rehearsal may be a bit chaotic, as people will be getting music parts, tuning, and finding what section to sit in.I will usually have name tags out for you to take to your stand when you arrive, but might not have them ready for this Saturday. There will  be a tuning line near the piano. Mr. Hammond, our wonderful volunteer pianist, will be playing the note “A” over and over for tuning purposes. (This is not the only note he knows.)

If I don’t have name tags printed,  just find a seat in your particular section and we will work out the details later. If you don’t know what section to sit in, just let me or one of my boys help you find it.

I will be posting to the I.S. Orchestra blog (usually on Thursday mornings) to let you know about rehearsal details. I will also send you the information via email, unless you opt out.

Mr. Rempher has selected this lovely piece to do for the October concert:

For Children by Bela Bartok

Here are some links to an audio file. Take a listen.

Looking forward to seeing you Saturday, September 5!
