Master Classes
In Master Classes, students play a solo piece in a practice performance setting and receive comments on their work from a visiting artist. Performance classes like these are incredibly helpful for students to gain experience and confidence performing solo works in a supportive environment. These classes are informative for students participating, as well as students and parents observing. Students are encouraged to memorize their pieces for Master Classes.
Master Classes are for all intermediate and advanced DUSS students (ISO, CSO, and YS levels). These classes are scheduled on select Saturdays, typically from 2:00-3:30 in Bone Hall or in a classroom with a stage. To see the calendar with a list of these dates, click HERE.
Master Classes are $30 for students performing. Observing all Master Classes is free and open to the public.
Students who are taking private lessons through DUSS can request to play in a Master Class through their teacher. Students who take lessons outside DUSS may contact Katharine Whitmore: katharine.whitmore@duke.edu.
Workshops
Workshops are opportunities for more than one student to work with a special guest instructor. There is usually a special focus for these workshops, i.e. Improvisation, Alexander Technique, the Art of the Bow, Baroque style, Fiddling, Bluegrass playing etc. There is usually no fee for Workshops.
